“Jalan jalan” (ˈdʒɑlɑn/ n.) is Malay/Singlish for “taking a walk”. To “jalan jalan” is to see what’s going on in the neighborhood, window shop, or just plain get outside.
To me, the phrase evokes a sort of easy breezy, unhurried, hips-first saunter, usually accompanied by the “thwack thwack” of flip flops.
The Jalan Jalan Guide is a small work-in-progress side project to document and share some of my family’s favorite places in Singapore, my hometown.
